Cambio

[Cambio] Hi, all. Monday morning, please announce and/or put on your white board and/or whatever you do to convey info to kids that you really want them to see:
  • Cambio performers please report the stairwell foyer by the alley at 12:35 (as in, eat quickly, don't dawdle).
  • Check in with your teacher(s) once you are there.
  • If you have a costume, bring it with you Monday.
Muchas gracias --Rie
There is no power at the theater where Cambio will take place so just go to your normal arts classes.

[warmup]
Self-assessment: I am wrapping up my grading for this unit on Wednesday, but before you see you grades I want you to self-assess your effort and output for World War II. For each of the three categories below give yourself a grade from A-F and write two sentences justifying/explaining why you think you earned that grade (at least 1 positive and 1 negative).

Newsreel Project: B+ I really did a good job. My video had strong information and was enjoyable to watch. My final version was not quiet as polished as I would have liked but it was not embarrassing.
Quiz: C+ I barely studied but lucked out because I watched the movie very closely. I should have spent some time reviewing the vocabulary.
Overall: B/B- I did good but not great with this unit. On the one hand my project rocked and I did the reading assignment but on the other I barely studied and only skimmed the reading.

Quiz today!

[warmup]
You will have 30 minutes for your quiz today.

For warmup post a comment with what would be the best way for you to review/cram for the 20 minutes before the quiz starts.

Personally, I'd take the rest of time to do the following: review the study guide, look over the notes, read the textbook, and make sure the reading assignment for this week has been dropped in the Dropbox.

FAIR DT one-to-one

[warmup]
Laptop turn in is May 27. For warmup defend out one-to-one program. (Here are comments from a star-tribune article on schools using laptops and ipads are classroom tools.)

"" We have so many budget cuts, lets buy the most expensive computers possible. Apple. What a waste of money buy 3 cheap laptops for the price of one macbook, or better yet make the students SHARE them!

So the choice between laying off teachers or buying non needed laptops?"

"Simply hard to believe, schools are telling us they are short on money Teachers are paying for paper and other supplies. Just wait until the kids loose or break the ipads. I suppose they just go in and pick up another one. The students should share the cost if possible. I think a $40.00 fee is a great idea. One thing the students will not learn is how to use the library and research facts etc for a paper."

"I have to say, I have been unimpressed with the games our school district has been promoting. The play to learning ratio is way too high. Games like hop some frog over obstacles and then you get to some place and you get a multiplication problems to solve. I prefer to just give my kid 60 problems to do with a pencil and when he is done, he can go outside and play."

"Sounds like a great idea, LOL. Children drop things, to give them a $500 piece of electronics is foolish. How many children drop their backpacks on the floor when they get home? How many children are "book dropped" in the hallway? This sounds like a very costly endeavor."

"Yep -- the old way isn't working. So the new choice is to trying a new expensive gadget or to get rid of the "old way"? I recommend getting rid of the unions (the old way) just like WI, and see how that works. It doesn't cost anything, and it CERTAINLY corrects the "old way"!!!"

"And how does this help an elementary school student learn? Can they learn to read just as well by using a BOOK? Isn't a good thing to go to the LIBRARY to do research rather than go to Wikipedia? Other districts have tried the laptop experiment and that was trumped as a "must have" How did that work out? Did those kids learn better? This is a case of extra money that needs a place to be spent."

Write about why our one-to-one program is good for students and their ability to learn or take the opposite side and write about why the program is a waste of money and should end. Start with a theses statement (The one-to-one laptop program has an overwhelmingly positive effect on my learning). Then use specific examples from your time here at FAIR DT to support your view.

Bin Laden is Dead

[warmup]
The New York Times (You can read the complete story here.)
WASHINGTON — Osama bin Laden, the mastermind of the most devastating attack on American soil in modern times and the most hunted man in the world, was killed in a firefight with United States forces in Pakistan, President Obama announced on Sunday night.

In a dramatic late-night appearance in the East Room of the White House, Mr. Obama declared that “justice has been done” as he disclosed that American military and C.I.A. operatives had finally cornered Bin Laden, the Al Qaeda leader who had eluded them for nearly a decade, in the early hours of Monday local time. American officials said Bin Laden resisted and was shot in the head. He was later buried at sea.

For todays warmup make one of your two current event post for this week. Again here below are the four parts of your current event post. Make sure you are not just answering the questions instead you should be rewriting the questions in your paragraph answers.
-Summarize the article.
-Explain why this article/event matter to you personally.
-Explain how it connects to what you are learning about in school (any class or just in general).
-Explain how this event makes you feel about the world in general.

Research of Another Kind

[warmup]
Watch this newsreel from the same time period as World War II. As you think about the newsreel you are creating, answer the following questions:
1) What are some things that this newsreel did well to create suspense and drama?
2) If you were directing this newsreel what would you change to make it better?
3) What techniques or ideas can you steal from this newsreel to make yours more authentic?

[reminder]
Make sure I have access to the following pieces of work:
-your sources (in MLA format)
-your notes
-your storyboard
-this weeks current events

I'll be catching up on my grading this weekend. Check out your grades late Sunday to see where you are at.

Storyboard

Our Second run Pixar Animation style storyboard jam with a sneak preview of production.

A more polished storyboard from Pixar's film Up.
[warmup]
Today we'll be making our storyboard for the newsreel project. For warmup today write about your experiences with storyboards. If your never used them before write some guesses about what they might be used for and why they are useful (based on the images above). You are expected to write at least a paragraph today.

The class, myself included, has been getting lacks with our engagement during the warmup. The expectations of the warmup are the follow:
-As you come in quietly find your seat and load up this blog. (Do not load anything else first.)
-Read the directions and completely follow the directions. (Somedays I ask for a specific amount of writing, others I ask for you to write for a specific time, and other I just want you to answer the questions.)
-When time is up quickly close your laptop and give me your attention so I can explain the day's plan. (Between myself and the timer you have enough warning that you can stop when I ask you. You can always continue your writing later in class.)

Newsreel Check-In

[warmup]
I've heard and seen good things concerning the research for the Newsreel. For your warmup today I want to you answer the following three questions:
What is going well about your project so far?
What are you excited to work on for this project?
What are you worried about and what do you need some guidance from me on?

Here are some note taking ideas, a.k.a. sub topics:*
What was the event and how did it happen?
Why did the even happened? (What events/personalities led to it?)
Who was a hero or what is a human interest story within the event?
What effect did the even have on World War II? (What was the outcome/result?)

*Tomorrow you will have sometime to research but not the whole hour.

Re-remembering

[warmup]
You'll have time to work on your World War II newsreels in class today but before we go forward lets look back...
Two weeks about we learned about the issues facing German that led to the rise of Hitler and World War II. Last Monday as the warmup I asked you to review/remember these issues. Did it stick? Well here is the same question. What are the four major issues facing Germany (and most of Europe) following World War I? This time I am looking for concise answers so try to fully explain your answer to this question in under 140 characters (like a tweet).

Earth Day

[warmup]
Today is Earth Day. What is your take on Earth Day? (Does it server a purpose? Does it help? Do we need it?)

If you have extra time you can calculate your carbon footprint here.

Google tasks

[warmup]
For your warmup today I want you to do one of this weeks current events. (Remember you need two a week posted to your personal blog. Last week we skipped them because of the reading test.)

The current event comes from one of the news websites or arts blogs I shared with you earlier this year. It has four parts (paragraphs) with the following information:
-Summary of the event/posting
-Why does it matter to you personally? Why did you pick this event?
-How does it connect to what you are learning in school (any class)?
-What does it say about the world in general?

Propaganda

[warmup]
Today we'll be looking at how nations of both sides of World War II used propaganda to influence people. To get us thinking about theses kinds of influences answer the following questions:

What is your favorite company or brand?
What do they sell or do?
Why is it your favorite?
What commercials do they have?
How else have you heard of them?

Setting the stage for World War II

[warmup]
There are four major issues facing Germany (and most of europe) after WWI. Based on what you learned Friday list all four then explain what they mean and why Germany/Europe was suffering. Lastly, explain how each of these issue might lead to more violence. If you get stuck use your notes from Friday.

example
1) Sea attacks- Many sharks on both sides died. Germany and Europe were suffering because of these deaths. More violence might be around the corner because all that killing leads to fear and mistrust, which in turn might bring back more violence.
2)
3)
4)

[learning objectives]
Who was Adolf Hitler?
What did National Socialist German Workers' Part (Nazi Party) want?
How did the rise of Nazism happen?
How did the Nazis rule?

The beginnings of World War II

[warmup]
This week we did not do any current events as homework. Instead for your warmup today write about anything you know going on. It can be local (even as local as in FAIR DT), national or international. If you haven't been connected to news instead write about your spring break and how you spent the 10 days off or your experiences during the GRAD reading test. You are expected to write for the whole warmup time.

Thursday, April 14, 2011

MCA testing is done and we can now resume our regularly scheduled programing.

BTW- I hate these kinds of posters.
[warmup]
New quarter. New desk arrangement. New seating chart. New unit. (no more GRAD testing too). = Quarter 4 success!

As you come in find your seat. You actually will not need your laptop for most of today. So just quickly post your initial thoughts on your new seat (good/bad/ok & why?). After you finish you can put your laptop away. You'll only have about 2 minutes for the warmup today.

Thursday, March 31, 2011

End of the Quarter 3

[warmup]
Instead of posting a comment here I want you to post this on your blog. Think about on your year so far and write (in paragraph form) about the following ideas:
-(introduction)
-your favorite thing about FAIR School Downtown
-something you'd like to see us add or drastically change
-class you are doing the best at, why, how can you keep that up
-class you are struggling the most with, why, how can you change that
-plans for 4th quarter and I thing you promise to do to make 4th quarter awesome
-(conclusion)

You will have 25 minutes to complete this warmup. When you finish with this blog entry you can use the extra time to study for the quiz.

The Core 3 quiz start time = 10:20.
The Core 4 quiz start time = 11:40.

What are you listening to?

[warmup]
I'm headed to Atlanta for spring break (to visit my younger brother) and I need some new media for the plane ride there and back...
1) Suggest some music, a movie, or game for in flight.
-What makes it so great? How did you originally find out about it? Why would I like it?

ALSO open up your homework so Mr. Hannan can come around and check you off for having the first 8 boxes completed.

End of the Quarter RANT

*WARNING RANT INCOMING*

I am crabby today. Thursday and Friday I checked in with you students so you'd know what is missing and what needs to be done to bring our grades up... so I sit down to grade this weekend excited to see what you guys have written and made but there is a problem. Where is the work to grade? Why haven't my students finished it or at least email me to let me know that they need more time? Why isn't my RSS feed for blogs full with updates? What about the in-class assignment from Friday? At least I'll have those to look at... nope only 12 students turned in the assignment. Those who said they'd email it to me this weekend didn't and those who said they put in it my dropbox first thing today didn't... major FAIL.

*END RANT*
Check your grade. Write a comment about it. Get ready to work. You are not getting time to work on old work today.

The Great War

[warmup]
World War I was known as the Great War. Today you'll be learning about life as a soldier in WWI. For warmup today free-write to the following writing prompt: Do you think soldiers are heroes?

(Today you are being graded PURELY on the amount of time you spend focused on the warmup. To get an A or B for it you will need to be writing for at least 5 of the 6 minutes allotted for warmup)

The System of Alliances

[warmup]
Think back to the simulation we acted out yesterday...
1) What country were you?
2) What happened to your country? (Did you get an alliances? Did you seek them out or did people find you? What was your strategy for getting alliances? etc.)
3) How did you personally felt during and about the simulation?
4) Explain what happened after the NEWSFLASH, when Archduke Franz Fredinand (from Austria Hungary) was assassinated (by Serbians).

Wednesday, March 23, 2011

Winter wonderland.

[warmup]
I wanted to skip our warmup this morning so we'd have more time for our simulation on the start of World War I... but this snow has put a damper on our plans. So for warmup today tell me about your favorite summer day ever (either fictional or nonfictional). If you finish early make sure to work on this weeks (or for some of you last weeks) blog posts. 2 per week.

Saladin vs. Lionheat II

[warmup]
If you didn't do the warmup Friday complete the questions below... or you already did Friday's warmup good job. Instead write about something interesting, anything interesting, just write something that will keep me entertained.

Read these quotes about Saladin and Richard the Lionheart.
Based on the quotes below:
1) What are your impression of them as leaders?
Based on the quotes Saladin seemed like a man who..... He also..... On the other hand Richard the Lionheart seemed liked a man who..... He would never.....
2) Which would you rather have be your leader? Why?
Personally, I'd prefer to have a leader like ....... because ...... and .....

Saladin
Lionheart
"Those who knew Saladin say little about his physical appearance: he was small and frail, with a short, neat beard. They prefer to speak of his pensive and somewhat melancholy face, which would suddenly light up with a comforting smile that would put anyone talking to him at ease."
"Richard of England, a red-haired giant, generous, incredibly brave, hot-tempered and tactless, won a great reputation in the capture of Acre, but quarreled with his allies who left him and went home.
"In general, one may say that Saladin was as demanding of himself as Nur al-Din [his predecessor] had been, but more lenient with others, although he was even more merciless than his elder when dealing with those who had insulted Islam.
"A very powerful man of great courage and spirit. He fought great battles and showed a burning passion for war. The king was indeed a man of wisdom, experience, courage and energy.......excitable, brave and clever."
"Saladin did not spend a single gold or silver coin on anything except a jihad (holy war). Out of his desire to fight for God's cause he left behind his family, children, country, home and all the towns under his control."
"His ambition was that of a mere warrior: he would fight for anything whatever, but he would sell everything that was worth fighting for. The glory that he sought was that of victory rather than conquest."
"I never saw him insult anyone. He always stuck to his word and was loyal. No orphan ever came to him without Saladin offering to provide the same amount of care as his father had done. He treated old people kindly and generously."
"He was tall in stature, of shapely build, with hair between red and yellow. His limbs were straight and flexible; his arms somewhat long; he had long legs.
"When Richard (the Lionheart) fell ill with a fever and appealed to Saladin to send him pears and peaches. Saladin sent him fruit and snow from the mountains to cool his blood"
"Richard was not a good king. He cared only for his soldiers. But he was brave, and loved a brave man."

What happened after the the crusaders took over Jerusalem?
Explain what kinds of things the crusaders built?
Saladin was a unique leader. What kind of person was he? Give 3 examples from the video to support your answer (you’ll find answers to this question throughout the video not just in this section)
What is Jihad?
Richard the Lionheart was also a unique leader. What kind of person was he? Give 3 examples from the video to support your answer (you’ll find answers to this question throughout the video not just in this section)
How did the crusades change the way Europeans treated the sick?
By the end of the crusades, how did Richard the Lionheart and Saladin treat each other?

Feedback

[warmup]
We watched about 20 minutes of a video on the crusades on Friday. Overall I'd say our attention was not great. I need your feedback. For the warmup today reflect on watching the video and watching them in general. (Was the video that bad? Should I have broken it up into smaller pieces? Was it just a long week? Are Friday's a good or bad day for videos? Are you guys just sick of the crusades? What do you think about watching educational videos in general?)

Why fight?

[warmup]
Think back to the shields you made yesterday. Knights left their family for years at a time to fight in a strange land. For what reasons did crusaders leave there home to fight in the in "Holy Land" (there are three of them). What would it take for you to leave your family, travel far from home, and fight in the army? Explain your answer using a full paragraph and if you wouldn't leave for anything explain that reasoning instead.

ALSO... make sure you have turned in the follow things: shield with reasons for knights fighting, what's feudalism (from last week), notes on Jerusalem, this weeks two posts on your blog.

Shielded

[warmup]
Use your warmup time to create a shield (I have paper and pencils if you need it). Make it look cool but leave some room to add stuff to it. You can make this shield digitally if you prefer.

Medieval times

[warmup]
Answer the following questions based on what you read yesterday and what you remember about ancient China:
1) What did the King give his lords and knights?
2) What three things did the knights in turn promise to do?
3) Why was this system so bloody and tumultuous (chaotic)?
4) Why was chivalry (honor) so important to this system?
5) What did the peasants/serfs do?

Knights!

[warmup]
We are starting to learn about the crusades today. As with any historical topic there are many parts to the puzzle of this topic. Free-write about knights. What do you know about knights? Where have you seen them? What kind of feelings do they bring up? What do you want to know about real knights?

[guiding questions]

Places you can look to help you review:

Christianity- chapter 5 section 4, Christianity discussion, Christianity bubble map, Christian parables, persecution under Rome.

I'd also go check out your grade on Icue. As far as I know it's 100% up-to-date as of Monday at 11am.

Digital Footprint

[warmup]
Many people think that personal branding is just for celebrities such as Paris Hilton or Britney Spears, yet each and every one of us is a brand. Personal branding, by definition, is the process by which we market ourselves to others. As a brand, we can leverage the same strategies that make these celebrities or corporate brands appeal to others. We can build brand equity just like them. *taken from here so click the link if you want to read more.

1) What image do you think you project to others in school? How about online?

2) What image should high schoolers be projecting to help them be successful in college and careers?

3) What kind of image do you think your parents would want in your girlfriend or boyfriend?

4) What image do you personally want to project?

5) Do you feel like you've taken enough time to discover and create own brand yet? (why or why not?)

RSS and Blogs

[warmup]
Write about how you spent Presidents Day weekend. Try and mimic a blog entry where you connect what you did this weekend to yourself, your peers/school, and the world at large.

For example...
Presidents Day has always been one of my favorite holidays... But my love for this day has nothing to do with why it's named or its history(for the heroics of our presidents and put in February because of George Washington birthday). It actually has to do with getting out of school. I can still clearly remember having my birthday fall on Presidents Day and telling my classmates that we didn't have school because of MY Birthday.

This weekend I turned 29. It makes me feel old and instead of getting out of school I spent most of this presidents day grading and planning for school. ..... (etc. etc. etc.)

[warmup]
Watch and listen to this brief clip about the Sultanahmet Mosque (also know as the Blue Mosque because if it's distinctive use of blue). You have or will read about the Five Pillars of Islam and this video focuses on the Call to Prayer. It starts a bit slow so just give it a chance.
What is a minaret used for?
What's unifiing about the Call to Prayer?
What's you impression of either the mosque or the city of Istanbul?

*Extra Credit: How many days of school have we had so far this year?
Once you finish the warmup you can get straight to work on reading and creating your bubble map based on Islam.

Stereotypes

[warmup]
In class today we'll be looking at stereotypes, specifically stereotypes about Arabs, Muslims, & Islam. For your warmup today free-write about stereotypes. Start by defining stereotype (what does it mean to you) then go on to explain your personal experiences with stereotypes. If you don't think you have much experience with stereotypes or run out of things to write about add on to your answer why you think you haven't experience them.  (And as always if you keep writing until the timer goes off and I tell you times up.)

[guiding questions]
What's the difference between a stereotype and generalization?
What are some stereotypes that the media and our culture have about Arabs, Muslims, & Islam.
Who are the Arabs?
Who was Muhammad?
What did he teach Muslims about?
What does the culture of Islam value?
