Stereotypes

[warmup]
In class today we'll be looking at stereotypes, specifically stereotypes about Arabs, Muslims, & Islam. For your warmup today free-write about stereotypes. Start by defining stereotype (what does it mean to you) then go on to explain your personal experiences with stereotypes. If you don't think you have much experience with stereotypes or run out of things to write about add on to your answer why you think you haven't experience them.  (And as always if you keep writing until the timer goes off and I tell you times up.)

[guiding questions]
What's the difference between a stereotype and generalization?
What are some stereotypes that the media and our culture have about Arabs, Muslims, & Islam.
Who are the Arabs?
Who was Muhammad?
What did he teach Muslims about?
What does the culture of Islam value?

  1. A stereotype is an exaggerated description of a certain type of people, for example people of a different race, religion, or just someone with a different hair color. I've personally never experience any stereotypes, but I've heard stories about stuff like that.

  2. My personal belief is that stereotypes are just something created from truth. Not all truth is necessarily good, but it's what's real none the less.
Stereotypes are everywhere and effect everyone. They are a part of life, and good or bad, they will alway be there.

  3. What sterotypes mean to me are people of different races, the clothes you wear, music you listen to or the way you wear your hair. There are so many of them, to me its when someone is getting judged by someone else. Like for example theres someone new at a school. Someone looks at them before even getting to know them and says "There a loser." Or "I don't like them because they look like a bum with no clothes or good shoes."

  6. A stereotype is something that discriminates against certain groups of people.
    Here are some sterotypes
Black people-They love Fried chicken-Love Hot sauce-Love Hot Cheetos- Grape Pop
    Mexicans-They love tacos
    Arabs-They all wear tubins
Asians-They all all smart- They are all short
    Jewish-They all have big noses

  7. A stereotype is common belief about how a person should be because of their race or color of their skin. A stereotype I have is that all Asians should be smart and good at math, but that isn't the case with all of them, obviously.

  8. A Stereotype is when people judge someone of the same group of other people and assumes they are all the same. My personal experience with stereotypes is when i automatically think all arabs smell the same. Or when people would think that i act the same as everyone else that lives in my neighborhood.

  9. A list of stereotypes:
    Somalians only drive taxi
    Asians are all smart
All Black people are scared of jobs
All black people like fried chicken, watermelon, and grape soda.
    Jews have huge noses.
No Mexicans are in the Olympics because they already ran, jump, or swam to get to America.
I apologize if I offended, but these our some stereotypes I heard.

  11. A stereotype is when a person defines another person not by who they are, but by other people who either share the same skin tone, ethnicity, religion, or by the activities they partake in.

A while back when I was talking to somebody at my church, they asked asked what religion my sister's boyfriend was involved with. When I told her that he was Muslim, she told me "Oh, I didn't know he was Somalian"... The stereotype was that all people that are Muslim are Somali.

  12. Hm. I guess there's wide variety of stereotypes there. I don't know many of them, I know, like, two of them. One: Everyone hates christians/americans. Two: They're all suicide bombers. Well, I know for fact that of course that's not true, it's just a blown up image of something that was serious. Naturally they don't hate (or more accurately "despise") christians, both religions share the story of Abraham and his son, the first story of god (I think). The Temple of the Rock proves this, both religions come and join together to see this holy place because it is said that it was there that Abraham followed god's orders to kill his son. ... I might be mixing up religions here, but I think it's right. I have no personal stereotypes with arabs/muslims/Islam. Why should I? I mean, Islam does indeed have it's share of "evil" people, but so does America. So does every country, it'd be stupid and ignorant to mention only Islam because of recent events.

  14. A stereo type to me is when someone or a group of people is judging another group of people as a whole because of the actions of one person or the assumptions they have of the group even though they don't take the time to confirm it or anything.
A stereo type I guess I would fit in is that I'm a lazy Mexican etc etc. My personal experience is I guess about being thought of that I don't know English sometimes in stores or assumed that I have a low GPA. ._.

  17. -I think a stereotype is when somebody thinks something of you or where you live just because of what they hear or see all the time.
-People call me ghetto just because I am loud sometimes so that is an example of a stereotype.

  18. a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing. This is what i think a stereotype is.

  19. A stereotype is an assumption made on someone by how they look. I haven't really had any stereotype experiences. Except that people think I'm a rich white girl but that's just about it.

  20. I've been over this topic a bajillion times and it's always led to the same answer- stereotypes are bad.

  21. To me, a stereotype is an over-dramatization of someone or something that you have heard of, but have no actual knowledge of.
My personal experiences with stereotypes... I don't think I have any about me. Why I think I haven't experienced any stereotypes yet is probably because there is nothing to make a stereotype about (i'm talking about my experiences with stereotypes).

  22. ahhh stereotypes stereotypes stereotypes. they kind of suck. what is a stereotype? It is an assumption made a bout a particular group of people. One example might be that Chinese people are crazy drivers. It is true that there are crazy drivers that are Chinese, but that doesn't mean that you should assume that your Chinese friend is going to get you into a car crash.
So today we are talking about stereotypes about Muslim people?? ohhh boy. I think this is probably the most under-represented racial problem today, mostly because it was a lot less common before 9/11 and the wars in the middle east. Gosh, it really makes me darn frustrated because there is a lot of prejudice going on about Arab people and it just isn't true. The religion of Islam has existed for thousands of years, pretty much as long as Christianity. for all those years it was (mostly) respected as a beautiful religion. Now, people are ruining that. We have religious extremists that are getting all of the attention. They make it seem like Islam is a backwards, violent religion which is wrong. And then we have ignorant Americans who believe the extremists and spread this message of ignorance and hostility around. It all comes down to xenophobia: the fear of unknown people. Well if you just get some damn empathy then you can understand people and that suddenly you realize that everyone is pretty much the same. pretty much everyone wants peace and happiness and freedom, and we have a small handful of people who want to ruing everything. I really think that muslim people are getting a really really bad rap these days and it makes me mad. 99 percent of muslims are just fine.

p.s. I think that, when defining groups, we should include the word "people" after the group name. for example, instead of saying "Musilims" you would say "muslim people". that way we remember that they are people
