Egypt

[warmup]
Yesterday we spent the day learning about the turmoil of North Africa, specifically Egypt. For you warmup today, write you impression of this upheaval. You do not have to answer all the questions in parentheses but you should be writing at least a paragraph with your thoughts. If you run out of things to write about on this topic write about something else until the timer goes off. (What's going on? Why do you think it's happening? What role did/is social media play(ing)? How do the images and sounds coming of Egypt make you feel?)

[guiding questions]
What caused the Roman Empire to weaken?
Who tried to save it? How?
What actually caused the Roman Empire to fall?
How does the decline and fall or Rome compare to what's going on in modern Egypt right now?

  1. Well I think the people are unhappy with their government and want to do something about it. Of coarse they pick the most dangerous route. Well I believe that they have started a riot, because they had nothing, but to do and they thought it might get more attention. Well they were using social media to talk and come up wit ha plan, but now that they turned off the media it caused them to take it outside and be a little bit in communication. Well I feel bad for the people that live there are tourist that are doing nothing wrong, but there lives are taking a toll. I think that they should pick a few people and sit down a talk about the problem at hand.

  2. What caused the Roman Empire to weaken?
Poor governmental policies, and too strong of a government in some aspects, but in other aspects, they weren't doing anything to help the people of Egypt.

Who tried to save it? How?
Only the people who work for the government. The majority of the people of Egypt (if not everyone) wants a new leader.

How does the decline and fall or Rome compare to what's going on in modern Egypt right now?
People are furious and want change. People both then, and now are tired of putting up with the government and are taking it into their own hands.

  3. Social Media made the government mad because people were writing on FaceBook how they don't like the government and stuff. When I hear and see about the war in Egypt right now about the government it makes me sad because they're fighting over stupid things like not liking the government. I think the government is over reacting though because they started hitting people and taking camera's out of peoples hands. They must want to hide something if that's the case...

  4. My overall reaction is that im shocked. I never knew that something like this could happen and i think its crazy how the government is treating them over there it looks bad. A lot of people are un-happy and the government doesn’t really care. I think that the government should find a more peaceful way to handle the protest.

  5. What I felt about it is that it like really bogus how they do the people in egypt. I think they should be abe to get jobs if the have a collage degree.I think they should get a new president so the people could be my happier.I think that the president should turn back on the cell phones and the internet.I think it wouldn't be so much choa's.

  6. I was very surprised and interested that Egypt took away all internet and cell phones. I think the way that the government is dealing with it isn't very good. The protests are turning violent and the protestors are getting hurt. Many buildings are also getting destroyed in the chaos and causing even more drama. I think the tear gas, rubber bullets, and water canons is a bit much. Turning the internet and cell phones off to prevent the people from revolting just made things worse. It made them want to fight back even more and didn't solve much. Now the people of Egypt want to overthrow the government even more.

  7. In egypt they are mad because the government is too controlling, and shut off their internet. People are marching in the streets and getting sprayed by fire hoses by the riot police. This makes me feel worried and scared because I wouldn't want that to happen here, and our government does have that kind of power, so it could happen. I don't know.

  8. The citizens in cairo don't want the president that is in power to be in power. There has been inflated food prices and the unemployment rate has gone up. The citizens were forming groups on face book and talking to each other on cell phones so they can overthrow the president. So the government turned off the internet and the cell phone service so he wouldn't get overthrown.

  9. Well, there were a couple factors that caused the Roman Empire to fail. I guess the biggest one was the fact that the Roman Empire was too big. Most of it's soldiers were mercenaries, none of them exactly loyal. There were also a bunch of viking raids going on somewhere up north, I think, which caused a bit of turmoil. The mercenaries who didn't give care much didn't do a good job of defending the empire from imposing forces. I guess Augustus wasn't the best leader at the time, either, he was kind of a wuss. I think that while the empire was falling there was this one general who was able to unify the whole northern banks of the Mediterranean... But I can't remember his name... Errr.. Eguest? I forget.
It's the same because the president had been the president for 25 years, but his "kingdom" grew too large and people were like "NO."

  10. The people were planning to over run the government in Cairo, so as they planed it out they used there cell phones and internet. So the government turned off the internet and cell phone usage in all of Egypt. Which I think that it just caused a bigger controversy in Egypt then what there needed to be.

  11. People are going crazy because the governor turn of the Internet and cell phone services. The reason why he turned of the Internet and cell phone service is because he didn't want be to be organized.

  12. In Egypt there is a riot going on due to the president, he has decided to turn off the internet and cell phones. People are really upset and are trying to over rule the government. I think this is happening because of the lack of jobs and the lack of responsibility. Social media was a huge part of the riot and what's going on in Egypt because they are apart of the whole issue. I could imagine the sounds coming from Egypt such as it being loud corrupt and just chaos.

  13. I think it is crazy what is currently happening in Egypt as we speak. I mean literally the country is making a moment in their history at this moment as I write. The Media is doing a good job at showing images of what is happening. If only it showed the views of everyone exactly how they are. Images coming form Egypt as desperate, angry, sorrowful, and needing for change.

  14. There is a protest in Egypt. The protest is about the Egyptian president. I guess he has been unfair to the Egyptians because the economy is getting bad and everyone is losing their jobs. The images and sounds coming of Egypt make me feel like Egypt will sooner or later will get worse.

  15. What's going on?

There are a bunch of riots and protests going on in Egypt. The president turned off the internet in the country and they turned off the service for the biggest phone company in the country.

Why do you think it's happening?

It's happening because all of the Egyptians hate the president and they are mad that he took away the internet and phone service.

What role did/is social media play(ing)?

People were making Facebook groups about hating the president's ways and they were organizing protests and the president didn't like it.

How do the images and sounds coming of Egypt make you feel?

It makes me feel bad for them. They obviously don't want him as president and they are mad about it.

  16. i think its crazy that it is going on and how the whole protest is getting agressive and how the president is trying to cover all the egyptians mouths i wouldent like if the president cut off all cell phone acess and internet i would be worryed if some military tank was blocking the free way so no one could get in or out one city.

  17. -The thing that happened in Egypt is bogus to me. the reason I said it was bogus is because the president should not have turned off the cell phones and internet. I think if the president was a good enough president then maybe people would not be trying to take him out of office. Also I really do not care about what is going on because it can not happen in the United States. Another thing is that they do not care about us so why should we care about them. That is how I feel about the thing that is going on in Egypt.

  18. What I feel about Egypt is that I think what their president did to them was pointless and stupid. Because all it did was make people more up sat, and not like him even more. Then that caused them to pretest and do marches. He should just do them a favor and just step down from the president seat.

  19. OK well ,to tell you the truth i really do not care what is going on in Egypt because it has nothing to do with me and my life, and the people that are in my like so why should i care about people that do not care about me and my country.I think it is really stupid what the president did to there phones and internet, but he did not turn my cell phone off so i really don't care.

  20. Well, basically what is happening in egypt is that people are protesting their current government, specifically their current president, Hosni Mubarak. He has been ruling Egypt unconditionally for about 30 years, and in that time has amassed a wealth of 30 billion dollars (pinky finger to corner of mouth). So a few weeks ago in Tunisia, people were protesting in a similar way and for the same reasons: poverty, hunger, unemployment, and government corruption. So egyptian people started protesting too, and every protest has been getting larger and larger, and now they are getting more violent and things. And now they have the army in there just trying to restore order. And now the president said that he won't be running for re-election. So it's a hot mess. People are very very very very very very very upset about this and they really really really really really want change. It's beginning to look a lot like revolution. Although I hope it's not because that would mean more violence. I did read something about how the main ruling party is forming talks with opposition leaders, so I hope the figure something out. Also, social media. yeah it's great. I know you love it mr. hannan so this event must be like so great because it's history in the making AND it has social media involved? man, yeah social media allowed people to organize more and share things with the outside world. because things like video cameras and still cameras and the distribution methods for those things are becoming cheaper and more readily available so it's harder for the government to control the flow of information, even if they turn the internet off. BTW, there is or was a bill proposed in the AMERICAN senate that proposes basically an emergency internet switch for emergencies....... and so you know, if they do that, we could have another egypt and then they would turn off the internet and then it would be bad. so yeah.

  21. I'm shocked at what's happening in Egypt. If people are organizing peaceful protests with the internet why would they turn it off? They had to know that it would piss off their citizens. I bet the citizens wouldn't be rioting and violent if that hadn't turned it off.
