The King gives his lords and knights land. Back then land basically equaled money. The King would also defend them in courts of law and things like that. In return, the knights would owe the king forty days of battle,as well as personal protection. This system was pretty chaotic because it was based off of violence. The knights were payed to fight. Plus, people could betray each other leading to bloody revenge.
ReplyDeleteChivalry was very important to the people in this system. The knights and noblemen had to honor the agreement or face harsh consequences. These consequences went beyond legal aspects and turned into social ones. If a knight's honor was damaged it was a huge blow to their reputation. Knights valued honor greatly, I think, because it was a trait that is hard to gain and easy to lose.
Peasants and serfs also had a small part in this system. Knights could hire them to tend to the knight's land, and in return the knight would defend that person.
