[warmup]
Romans not only took over the greeks land they also stole their gods. For example:
Mars- Roman God of War [Greek god Ares]
God of war, spring, growth in nature, agriculture, terror, anger, revenge, courage and fertility. Protector of cattle. The son of Jupiter (Zeus) and Juno (Hera), he was the god of war. He was the most prominent of the military gods that were worshipped by the Roman legions. The martial Romans considered him second in importance only to Jupiter (Zeus). His festivals were held in March (named for him) and October.
Below are some of the major Greek/Roman gods. Choose one and answer the following questions:
1) What god(s) did you choose?
2) What does this god rule over (and what kind of god was he/she)?
3) Why might the Romans have taken this god and only changed his/her name? (Give me at least two reasons.)
4) Make two guesses about how Roman society based on them taking over the Greek gods.
Greek God----->Roman God
Aphrodite---> Venus
Apollo---> Apollo
Ares---> Mars
Artemis---> Diana
Athena---> Minerva
Hades---> Pluto
Hephaistos--->Vulcan
Hera ---> Juno
Hermes---> Mercury
Poseidon---> Neptune
Zeus---> Jupiter

they might have taken the god zeus because everyone was already used to a god thats similar. And because zeus controls everything
ReplyDeletePluto, Hades, whatevs.
ReplyDeleteThe domain of death, and sometimes war.
Well, I remember reading that although the Romans didn't exactly love the Greek, they found their scholars and intellects(priests and stuff)very.. I dunno convincing or appealing. So I guess they took the god because they just liked the idea of it, and changed the name because the original name wasn't greek.
Although I guess another theory was that it just kind of spread through word of mouth and the names kind of got weird until they settled on one or another name. WE MAY NEVER KNOW.
1. I chose Poseidon.
ReplyDelete2. Poseidon rules the sea and thunderstorm.
3. I think the Romans kept the idea of who they were because they agreed with the Greeks. I also think maybe they didn't want it to seem like they took their god.
4. I think that the Roman's used a lot of what the Greeks already invented, but they just changed the name.
Neptune (Poseidon). He is the God of the Seas/Water, horses and earthquakes. He was responsible for shipwrecks and drowning. Well it is possible they stole this god because they might have thought it would being them luck when traveling by water. Maybe they have good fortune based on the gods. Or maybe they worship only these gods and they can't do anything without asking the gods first.
ReplyDelete1. Hera (Juno)
ReplyDelete2. She protects marriages
3. Because she's really pretty and nice.
4. Maybe because they want the pretty goddess and the nice one. Or maybe it's just because she's a woman they want her.
Merury
ReplyDeletehe was a thief and a messenger.
Because the gods need a messenger,
and he is a significant character to many stories.
What god should i choose hera because she was the protector over marriages. What kinds god was she,she was the marriage god.Her name got replaced with juno i think probably because they didn't like the name.I think that they were very strict.I think that made people do things they didn't want to
ReplyDelete1.Athena(Minerva)
ReplyDelete2.She is the goddess of war, particularly battle strategy. She is very kind.
3.Because they couldn't come up with their own gods and they saw all the greek gods, changed their names and claimed them as their own.
I choose Mars god of war. Mars ruled war. I think the Romans changed the names of the gods because they had the same idea of gods just in a different concept.
ReplyDelete1. Zeus
ReplyDelete2. He rules over everything and the father of all gods
3. Because they didn't want it to seem like they stole there idea
4. Maybe they were just being followers or maybe they looked up to them
I did hera of my Greek god.
ReplyDeleteShe is the queen of the gods, Goddess of marriage.
I really don't know why they changed her name.
1.)The Greek God
ReplyDelete2.)Grrek
3.)So that the name may fit there culture
4.)
1. Aphrodite (venus)
ReplyDelete2. Goddess of love
3. a. They wanted to hide the fact that they were stolen
b. they wanted the names to be more Roman?
4. The live like in the movie 300?
I chose Artemis (Diana). She is the goddess of hunting, wilderness, and women and girls. She is often depicted with her bow and arrow. I chose this god because I like the idea of a god that brings and appreciates all life, and knows the importance of women in life. I think the romans might have done this whole name thing because it wan't exactly stealing. Whenever we talk about this we use the owrd "steal" but I think it's more adopting. In fact, I think it's a sign of respect that the Romans took the Greek culture and made it their own instead of throwing it away. They simply changed it because they are an individual group.
ReplyDeleteI think because the romans have these same gods, their society probably acted a lot like Greek civilization. They are constantly reminded to do their duty because there is a god for pretty much every thing, and they must pray to those gods and act in the right way in order to be happy, healthy, and productive. I think this really instilled a sense of self-imposed order in Roman society. I can imagine people waking up every morning and praying to or making an offering to whatever god rules over their profession. I can also imagine the gods and goddesses being integrated into school, work, all life.
1. I choose Artemis Diana
ReplyDelete2. Artemis was the goddess hunting and virginity and child birth
3. To make it their own
4. They lived kinda like the greeks with a simple none challenged life.
1) Hera
ReplyDelete2) She was zeus wife and looked out for the women so when a man cheated she punished him for that.
3) To make it there own gods. They liked what they did but wanted different names.
4) They used a lot of what greek's had , second their society is probable just like greek's.
1) What god(s) did you choose?
ReplyDeleteZeus
2) What does this god rule over (and what kind of god was he/she)?
Jupiter
3) Why might the Romans have taken this god and only changed his/her name? (Give me at least two reasons.)
- to make it their own
- so they could seem different to others
4) Make two guesses about how Roman society based on them taking over the Greek gods.
- they feel powerful
- have a certain amount of power.. i guess ?
1) What god(s) did you choose?
ReplyDeleteArtemis---> Diana
2) What does this god rule over (and what kind of god was he/she)?
Aphrodite was the goddess of nature, hunt, and wild animals.
3) Why might the Romans have taken this god and only changed his/her name? (Give me at least two reasons.)
*They wanted a god to look over the people who hunt to keep them safe.
*Diana is a Greek name meaning Divine which I don't get. Why would the Romans name their god with a Greek name?
4) Make two guesses about how Roman society based on them taking over the Greek gods.
*They probably wanted gods for the same things as the Greeks did so they just took their gods and changed the names.
*They couldn't think of their own gods.
-I choose Minerva
ReplyDelete-The god of war.
-They wanted to make them there own.
-Hard and demanding.
1. Aphrodite/Venus
ReplyDelete2. Goddess of beauty and love.
3. So they can make it seem like the Roman's were greater and so they have something to be proud of(??)
4. They stole from the Greeks because they might of been jealous
1. I chose Hera and Athena.
ReplyDelete2. Hera is the god of marrige and Athena is the goddes of war.
3. so they do not know they took there god.
4.
1.Hera
ReplyDelete2.god of marriage
3.They wanted to make the know and something to be proud of
4.they feel powerful and they couldnt make their own up
