MLK Day

[warmup]
Monday was Martin Luther King Jr. Day. (A Holiday for the birthday of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. which is observed on the third Monday of January.) The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. spoke of his dream that one day people would be judged not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character. How close have we come to realizing Martin Luther King's dream*? (be sure to explain/defend your answer)

*Thanks MPR for the question. If you would like to see what some other Minnesotans answered click here.

  1. We are really close because when you apply for a job they don't pick if you are excepted by the color of your skin but by your background and things like warrants.

  2. Well I think that we are getting closer and closer every day. I know that there is most likely still a couple people that still do that kind of judging, but we are getting there

  3. I think that we have come pretty close, but are not quite there yet. Because racism hasn't gone away and there's tons of racial profiling. I do think that we could get there though.

  4. I think we have reached mlk's goal. We all have equal rights and we've have a black president, There might still be a few minor kinks to work out but for the most part we've reached his goals.

  5. I think that we are closer than back in the day when he was still alive preaching. As for his dream i don't think we are all the way there. There are still a lot of racist people even if they don't seem racists. Also now there is nothing that is really segregated.

  6. I think we've come pretty close but people still get judged by the color of their skin. No matter how much people don't want to do it they can still always think it. They might not want to but people still might judge people.

  7. I think we have stop judging by the color of our skin but have slowly moved forward to judging by wealth. So i dont know how far we have really come in this world because there is still inequalities and martin luther kings dream is not really fulfilled.

  8. I believe that a lot of people have realized Dr. King's dream because all Races are friends with another no beef or drama just less people feel we shouldn't conversate but most follow his dream

  9. We've come to a point in his dream where we just don't know anymore. I mean, because people are in communities, and in these communities comes the racist stereotypes, it's hard to say facts out loud without it sounding racist. Say there is a ghetto largely populated by a colored race, if I said that in class (or anywhere else for that matter) it would be racist because I said something "demeaning" about a race as a whole, even though I commented only on one community that happens to be in a ghetto. BUT if I said something about a "non" colored community it wouldn't be racist. So, saying that we don't judge people by their color or race or whatever we need to say these days is just retarded. It's all retarded. Ask anyone, they can make anything racist I'm sure. Someone told me it's racist to make Mac's white because "it shows a superiority" with the color white. What in god's name.. I just...
Well sh&* no we haven't come far in his dream. Hard to say but it's true.

  10. I don't think we are close at all. People are still judging everyone else. The only thing that has changed is that now people have more rights.

When people say that it's equal now, it's not true, which is still messed up.

  11. I feel we have came very close to realizing Dr. Martin Luther King's dream. We have accomplished so much in the world, even though we are not there we are fairly close. I believe that this is true because people today aren't judged as much as they use to be, but there is still always going to be a little judgement floating around.

  12. Some people have come to realize not to judge people by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character. Not everyone still gets that. Some people are still racist and still judge people by the color of their skin. Some of us have come to realize that and some have not.

  13. I don't think there are that many racists anymore but they are still out there. I think the number of racists have gone down a lot. So I think we have come close.

  14. I think we are almost finished with his dream there is still some racism going on but for the most part a lot of ppl are not racist.

  15. Every public place is diverse and against the law if it excludes some races. Even though America is like this now it is not completely free from racism but it is working to get there. Racism will always exist if there is ignorant people.

  16. Well, this is a complicated answer to a complicated question. We have definitely made some progress, and it's crazy to think that back then it was a novel idea to have a black person on television, or to have a black person as the president. Barack Obama is a very clear example of the progress we've made, but we're not there yet. I think Dr. King would still be working as hard as ever if he were alive today. There is still racial discrimination, especially in school and work, and we can't think that we've made it in terms of Dr. King's dream.

  17. We have came to understand his dream. People see what he was trying to do for all different types of races and different people. There may be some people who are still raciest and don't understand equality but other then a few people everyone has came to understand.

  18. No, because there are still people that are discriminated against. Sure, we're a lot better than we were like 40 years ago but crap still happens. Plus, all we ever really learn about is the history of black people's struggle for rights. We never really learn a lot about women's struggle or the struggle of other races.

  20. I think that we have not yet to full fill this dream of Dr. Martin Luther king, Jr. because people are going to stay the same they do not care about anything or anybody, but themselves. There is a certain extent people will go to to make them seem like they full filled this dream, but in all reality the world is never going to be what he wanted it to be.

  21. -I do not think that we had reached his goal because there still is racism in the world with blacks and whites. Another thing is that white people still they have the right to boss blacks around like the time is still like that and its not. To be honest I do not think we will ever reach his goal.

  22. How close have we come to realizing Martin Luther King's dream*? (be sure to explain/defend your answer)

I don't think we're even close to realizing it. Because there is still a lot of racism. Even though people tried to hide it, it's kind of obvious. . . You can't hide something, that has never went away.

  23. I don't think that we reached Martin Luther King's dream because some people being racism to each other.People are judging each other just because of their skin colors. At times I don't think we will reach the goal if the racism doesn't stop.
