Eightfold Path
[warmup]
1) Read this story.
2) Answer the following two questions:
-What step or steps of the eightfold path do this person seem to be following?
-What evidence did you find that supports your answer to question 1? (What made you think it?)
You are standing in line. How much do you like that? Oh, what's your mind doing? Thinking about this and you look down the line and they're taking that, they got a really big pile of stuff, it's going to take a long time... aahhh!"And then you are thinking this and you are thinking that." Don't do that...
You see the dissatisfaction that arises, "Oh I'm bored, and I'm looking at my watch and I got to get going, and I can't stand here in line... and oh! They just dropped something, now they got to clean it up!"
All of those kinds of thoughts, those kinds of dissatisfaction thoughts. What you think and ponder on, that's the inclination of your mind. You think and ponder dissatisfaction, dislike thoughts, your Harmonious Lifestyle is not so Harmonious at that time. So what to do? LET GO of that stuff!, every body in line is thinking basically the same thing. And it’s just nonsense thoughts. Impatient thoughts. All of that.
Put a little smile, start radiating some Loving-Kindness. Send some Loving-Kindness to the clerk. That's a hard job. Having a big line of people that are all impatient and quite often they are not very nice... all they want to do is pay for this stuff and get out of there. So send her some Loving-Kindness, she needs it. When you get up to her, practice the eightfold path.
[guiding questions]
What does the eightfold path look like in everyday life?
How does or might geography effect people?
What are major geographic features of Asia?
How does or might they effect the history of Asia?

To be decided by you (the class)!

Um. I have no idea, the whole idea of the eightfold path eludes me. So, I would have to take a guess at Right Mindedness. S/he's bored, so she's thinking about this or that, and to clean them up s/he needs to make the Right Minded decision to clean up all the access thoughts. S/he needs to have the Right Mindedness to be kind to the clerk, or the people around her/him.
ReplyDeleteWell none at first, but when the person gets to the beginning of the line the person has right mindfulness, right effort and right speech. Well at first the person is complaining about going and other things like that, but then he starts to think that maybe he should be kind, because it's a hard job to do.
ReplyDelete1. Right View
ReplyDelete2.When it says you should forget all the negative thoughts and be happy.
They are sitting there waiting patiently. They are not being rude or yelling at anyone they are waiting and thinking.
ReplyDeleteThe person is practicing Right Attention and Right Thought. For Right Thought, he is concentrating on thinking about good things and not letting the bad things, like the line, get in the way of that. For Right Attention, the person is reflecting on what is happening and thinking about how he can make the situation better by "sending good thoughts" to the clerk.
ReplyDeleteI think it's Right concentration : Focusing on 1 thing. Because I dont think they should worry about the clerk, just their own life....
ReplyDeleteI don't really know the step/steps he is taking but he starts off by asking a lot of questions
ReplyDelete-Just living your life in your place
ReplyDelete-geography effects people because it separates people from eath other. this causes societies to be different from one and other, whether it be customs, or perception on what is considered rude or not.
-Mountains
1.Right thought, right minded, right speech, right effort.
ReplyDelete2. not sure.
3. not sure.
4.not sure.
The person is being mindful and then acting right. This is because they notice the situation, think about it, then draw a conclusion and act on it.
ReplyDeleteRight attention and Right Thought
ReplyDeleteThey could be thinking negatively about their situation but they catch themselves and change their thoughts.
-What step or steps of the eightfold path do this person seem to be following?
ReplyDeleteRight Aspiration or Right Behavior
-What evidence did you find that supports your answer to question 1? (What made you think it?)
Because the person said that they were going to "send her some Loving-Kindness".
I definitely think that this little story is referring to the second step of the eight-fold path. I think this because the second step is all about right thought. The person in this story is all down in the dumps because of all of these dissatisfying things that are happening in the grocery store line. The second step says that you must continually think in the right way (a positive way) in order to achieve happiness. The writer is telling you to follow the second step, so you would think something along the lines of, “well I have to wait longer to get my groceries, but at least I can get food on a regular basis, and I’m thankful for that”. When you think like that, you suddenly become much happier. This happy energy can rub off on other people (referred to in the story as “Loving-Kindness”).
ReplyDeleteI don't know I haven't been here...
ReplyDeleteAriana
ReplyDeleteI think that these people should maybe focus on one thing before trying to do other things.
I also think that they should think about it before you do it.
Right Effort (Mental Discipline)
ReplyDelete-The sixth step is to find what is causing distractions in your life.
-I think that this person is focusing on the right effort and is only worried about what is happinging now and only now also this person is trying to find out the distractions
1. One of the Eightfold Paths the person followed was Right Aspiration. The Right Aspiration is basically changing your negative thoughts into positive thoughts.
ReplyDelete2. "And it’s just nonsense thoughts. Impatient thoughts. All of that.
Put a little smile, start radiating some Loving-Kindness. Send some Loving-Kindness to the clerk. That's a hard job"...."When you get up to her, practice the eightfold path."
right aspiration:
ReplyDeletein every day life it looks like a person showing patience stuck in traffic
if you give negative energy it is most likely there will be more negative energy around you
The right thought because when the person was being impatient. She or he notice that the clerk had a lot going like people spilling things.
ReplyDelete"Send some Loving-Kindness to the clerk. That's a hard job."
-What step or steps of the eightfold path do this person seem to be following?
ReplyDeleteI think right knowledge, right speech, right mindfulness, and
-What evidence did you find that supports your answer to question 1? (What made you think it?)
Because of the different things that it said like because he had got mad that he was waiting in line & started thinking bad things. But, then he decided to get over it and just put a smile on his face and wait in the line.
